What to ExpectThrough my education as a Multimedia Designer and later as a student of Digital Concept Development, I have gained an in-depth introduction to a wide range of design methodologies. This knowledge has been continuously expanded and strengthened, particularly through challenging projects and assignments that have tested and refined my understanding. Among the theories I have worked with are Design Thinking, Future Thinking, and Lean Startup. These methodologies have not only sharpened my analytical thinking but also improved my ability to adapt and apply theoretical frameworks in practical contexts. By applying these methods, I have developed a flexible design approach that enables me to create innovative and effective solutions to a variety of challenges.
IDEO Design Thinking Process:
IDEO’s approach to design thinking was the first process I was introduced to during my time as a Multimedia Designer. I have worked extensively with this method throughout my education and have become highly familiar with it.
Personally, I consider the IDEO model one of the most effective processes for gaining a solid understanding of design thinking. It promotes deep user insight and strong ideation practices. However, I do not believe it is the most suitable model in every scenario, as it can at times feel confusing and less applicable in complex projects.
Double Diamond:
I was first introduced to this design thinking approach during my studies in Digital Concept Development, and I have since become a strong advocate of the method. The process closely resembles IDEO’s approach but feels more structured and accessible.
I find Double Diamond easier to iterate and visualize due to its clear phases: Discover, Define, Develop, and Deliver. The model has also equipped me with a broad arsenal of methods and tools, strengthening my ability to handle diverse design challenges and ensure successful implementation.
This design process is the most recent addition to my toolkit and has quickly become a valuable asset. Future Thinking integrates effectively with other design processes such as Design Thinking and Lean Startup.
This approach is unique in that it incorporates both past and future perspectives to identify factors related to a given problem. This enables the exploration of a broader range of potential solutions through divergent thinking. Like the Double Diamond model, Future Thinking offers a robust toolbox of models and techniques that help navigate and optimize the design process, contributing to more comprehensive and future-oriented solutions.
Lean Startup is a methodology I have limited experience with, but it demonstrated significant potential in a project where rapid testing was crucial. At its core is the development of low-fidelity prototypes that can be tested and iterated based on observations and feedback.
This creates an intensive cycle of build, test, and learn. Although my experience with this method is brief, it has been highly valuable — particularly in optimizing user interfaces (UI) and user experiences (UX) for websites and applications. By applying this approach, I was able to quickly identify and implement improvements, significantly enhancing overall design and functionality.
SCRUM is a process I was introduced to during my studies in Digital Concept Development, and it has proven to be a key resource in all group projects. This agile method has been essential for ensuring alignment within teams and defining clear responsibilities for each member.
SCRUM has also been valuable in anticipating and addressing potential issues that may arise during a project. One of SCRUM’s greatest strengths is its promotion of communication among team members, ensuring cohesive progress and continuity throughout the project.
SCRUM requires participants to assume specific roles with strong interdependencies. This can be challenging if team members are not equally engaged or share the same expectations regarding effort and contribution. Therefore, the method demands a high degree of collaboration and commitment from all involved to ensure success.
